2011, DEC 13: VIETNAM, HO CHI MINH CITY-F

On the way back from the Mekong Delta, we stopped at the Ho Chi Minh City’s Cholon District (No. 5) to spend some time at the China Town’s Binh Tay Market. Clock-bearing central tower distinguish this landmark from the neighboring buildings.

Stores here overflow with various products, since most of the trade that takes place is wholesale.

Restaurants also are very busy. All in all it is a very crowded and noisy.

But the little courtyard inside is quite peaceful. At its center there is a memorial stone, which is surrounded by four bronze lions and dragons.

The district also has the Thien Hau Pagoda. This Chinese-style 18th-century pagoda is dedicated to the sea goddess.

Seafarers used to pray for and gave thanks for safe trip from and to China. Once a year, a festival is held here and people gather to pray for happiness, prosperity and fulfillment. But devotees offer prayers, incense and flowers throughout the year.

Tonight we retired early, in preparation for our departure next morning for Siem Reap, Cambodia.
